Future developments
In recent weeks there has again been growing interest in the UK in Tidal power. The French have used tidal power at their power station on the River Rance since 1966. It produces 240megawatts and can generate electricity on both the ebb and flow of the tide.
The Severn Barrage would be a much larger scheme which undoubtedly would have significant initial environmental impact, however opinions vary for the longer term with those opposed predicting irreversible detrimental changes and those in favour accepting that their would be change but predicting many benefits.
The advantage with tidal power is that to some extent it offers the opportunity to match maximum generation to peak demand for electricity. It is not as flexible as Hydro Power however, as the generation cycle is dependant on the actual tidal flow and height over a 24 hour period and needs to be coordinated with the power demand requirements.
Should the Seven Barrage get the go ahead it would be a major civil engineering project with undoubtedly many economic benefits as well providing a significant source of renewable energy
Efficient Use of Energy
The efficient use of energy is a very extensive subject and it is not our intention to provide a comprehensive over view here but as our interest is centred on the generation of electricity it is perhaps appropriate to mention one very efficient method of using electricity to provide heating for a building which is undoubtedly a major source of energy usage.
The ground source heat pump, which basically works in a similar manner to a refrigerator, is a most efficient technology for providing heating.
Where as the refrigerator extracts heat from the interior of the fridge and dumps it at the rear through a radiator the ground source heat pump extracts heat from the ground, which well below the surface, can always provide some heat even in the coldest weather. This heat energy is then transferred to the building. The efficiency comes from the coefficient of performance which allows the electrically pump driven to extract more heat energy from the ground than is required to drive the pump. A truly efficient use of electricity
